Floriography (the language of flowers) is a means of communication via the use or arrangement of flowers. This concept was coined by those overly romantic and deeply sentimental Victorians. They attributed a unique definition to each flower type, so every bouquet contained a special, secret message expressing what they wanted to say, but could not say directly to the recipient.

I’ve mixed things up a little with this one though (hence the title), so whilst tulips are a declaration of love and cosmos symbolise joy in love and life, ammi means fantasy, anemone, to be foresaken, hydrangea evokes dispassion and peony anger - so not all is at it first appears. For the first time I have also included old score sheet music within the layers, giving added interest and depth to the background detail.

It is a mixed media collage on wooden board combining acrylic and household paint, spray paint and hand cut collaged elements taken from my extensive floral library. The graffiti and typographic elements originate from Bristol, my local city and Brick Lane - one of my favourite haunts in London.
